UNIONS BY THE NUMBERS
The Department of Labor has filings on record for over 300 unions in Alabama
having a membership of 25 or more.
The largest labor union in Alabama, the U.S. Steelworkers of America, has over
24,000 active members. Rounding out the top five are the United Food &
Commercial Workers (10,500), Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical & Energy Workers
(9,300), Auto Workers (7,100) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical
Workers (7,000).
Total union membership in the state now numbers 195,000, about 10.2% of the
workforce (BLS Survey, 2005).
